CLINICAL APPLICATION OF PERITONEAL DIALYSIS

Abstract
Since peritoneal dialysis was applied in the human first by Grollman in 1951, there has been improvement in technical procedures as well as clinical results.
Several advantages in peritoneal dialysis in comparison with hemodialysis are well recognized. Nevertheless, clinical application of peritoneal dialysis has not been widely pervaded in Korea because of limited supply of the dializing solution. Willi the initiative of the authors, the solution became available commercially in 1966.
At St. Mary¢¥s Hospital, peritoneal dialysis was performed in 18 instances on 17 patients from Jan. 1966 through Feb. 1967. Among 17 patients, 3 had acute renal failure due to exacerbation of chronic urinary tract infection, septicemia and anaphylactoid reaction following administration of a plasma expander, respectively 9 were due to severe epidemic hemorrhagic fever and 5 had acute barbiturate intoxication.
In acute renal failure including oliguric stage of epidemic hemorrhagic fever, peritoneal dialysis are useful for uremia but for acute barbiturate intoxication further trial of the procedure in. selective cases are deemed warranted.
In as much as hemodialysis units are scarce in Korea, not to speak of the expense and the skillful personnel involved, wider application of peritoneal dialysis in acute renal failure, epidemic hemorhagic fever in particular and intoxication of chemicals, is strongly advocated.
